Updated: Jul 10

In October, our Deaf Visual Art Program continues to pilot an innovative deaf docent-led ASL tour project at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum and Pulitzer Arts Foundation. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and inclusion within the world of art and culture. These deaf-led ASL tours provide a unique opportunity for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or DeafBlind to fully engage with and appreciate art in their primary language, American Sign Language (ASL). Led by knowledgeable docents from the deaf community, these tours break down communication barriers and promote accessibility for all.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to organizations like the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, the Missouri Arts Council, and the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis. Their invaluable support has been instrumental in bringing these transformative cultural experiences to the deaf community.

We commend Devon Whitmore and Tim Smith for their roles as docents, as well as all the attendees who joined us for this enriching experience. They represent a positive step towards ensuring that individuals of all backgrounds and abilities can actively participate in and enjoy cultural experiences.

We are delighted to announce that more deaf-led ASL tours are on the horizon. Stay tuned for upcoming events and opportunities to be part of this transformative journey. We also hope to see you there!
