POSITION:               STAFF INTERPRETER (SIGN LANGUAGE)

CLASSIFICATION:  HOURLY, NON-EXEMPT (MINIMUM 20 HRS/WEEK)

REPORTS TO:       MANAGER, INTERPRETING DEPARTMENT

LOCATION:             ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

SALARY:                 COMPETITIVE BASE RATE WITH BENEFITS AVAILABLE

Position Description:

 

Staff Interpreter provides sign language interpreting services to the deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind community, as well as the DEAF, Inc. staff/clients as requested and/or scheduled by the Interpreting Department.

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Interpret between American Sign Language (ASL) and English
  • Interpret for a variety of assignments (may include education K-12, post-secondary, medical, behavioral health, business, finance, and other areas)
  • Willing to travel to all areas in St. Louis metro area and surrounding counties
  • Remain professional at all times: (i.e., stay in the interpreting role, ascertain and maintain professional lines and boundaries, maintain professional interpersonal communication skills, meet schedules, timelines and maintain records)
  • Adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct, including confidentiality
  • Adhere to DEAF, Inc. policies and procedures as well as department requirements
  • Attend DEAF, Inc. staff meetings, staff development activities and events as required
  • Complete required paperwork in a timely manner and maintain accurate records
  • Support the mission of DEAF Inc. and understand deaf culture

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Maintain current state required licenses and/or certifications in sign language interpreting
  • Sufficient continuing education to maintain professional growth and certification
  • Valid State Driver’s License, current automobile insurance, and reliable transportation
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings, late nights, early mornings, and weekends

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Completion of an Interpreter Training Program or a two- or four-year undergraduate degree
  • 5 years interpreting experience in a variety of settings
  • MICS level 4-5 (or equivalent BEI certification) in interpreting and transliterating
  • RID or CDI Certification
