DEAF, Inc.'s Board and Staff want to take a moment to speak candidly about the tragedy that is enveloping our hearts, minds, and country right now. Acts of injustice against Black people, including George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others, have created an inflection point.

To the Black Community, we recognize your pain and feelings of fatigue over the injustices you face every day. The color of your skin should not impact how you are treated. Systemic racism is deeply rooted in our society and, as an organization, we realize we have a lot to learn and work to do to fix this. We understand this work begins with learning, listening and pushing for change. The Deaf community has always prided ourselves in being diverse and accepting of diversity. However, there is always an opportunity to learn and engage in a productive dialogue.

And so beyond just making a statement, today we are making a commitment that we will work on educating ourselves to understand this issue better. We will hold ourselves accountable to the values that we profess to have. That’s the only way for us to credibly talk about affecting change.

Lastly, we’d like to encourage you to reach out to us. This organization is built on community, and we rely on our community for feedback.

DEAF, Inc. stands by you.
