Etiquette for the Interpreter

• Please arrive at your assignments 15 minutes before the meeting starts. Use this time to absorb the environment and become familiarize of the communication skills of the deaf or hard of hearing person. Also, arriving earlier helps ease the possible discomfort and fears of the deaf person or service providers before the meeting.

• If effective communication is not occurring, please step in and explain to both parties that you feel that effective communication is not happening. Keep in mind that this does not reflect your signing abilities, but it does enhance your professionalism and desire for effective communication.

• Interpret everything that is being said, even if it’s not related to the assignment.

• Dress appropriately. Wear non-distracting clothes – no stripes, spots, patterns, etc. Avoid wearing large jewelry whenever possible.

• Interpreters should not counsel nor interject personal opinion, but may exercise professional judgment in assessing whether or not communication is being understood and may also inform the consumers involved of available resources as appropriate.

• The interpreter shall provide information, when necessary, to the consumers involved as to the role and appropriate use of the interpreter.

• The interpreter uses discretion in accepting assignments based upon the capacity to maintain impartiality with regard to the setting and/or consumers involved.

• After the assignment, all information discussed in the assignment shall remain confidential and not shared with others.
