Deaf Support: Questions and Answers
  •    Are there any income restrictions?

No.  We help all deaf/hard of hearing people and their families with issues related to deafness, regardless of income level.

  •    Do you help hearing people, too?

Yes we do, if it involves to issues related to deafness.   For example, parents of deaf children often seek our assistance to ensure that their children have equal access to services, communication access, education, recreational opportunities, and other issues.   Also, we offer sign language classes and a variety of support groups.  See  Awareness.

  •    Can I walk into the office and seek help?

Visitors are always welcome at DEAF Inc..  However, often we are busy helping others so we can’t see you right away.  We would prefer if you call first and make an appointment.   That way, we can devote our time to your issues and be prepared for your arrival.

  •    I live outside of Saint Louis vicinity.   Can DEAF Inc. help me?

Yes, but we may be somewhat limited in what we can do.  We will make phone calls for you and make referrals for you.  We can also talk to you over the phone.  We may not be able to travel to see you because we are limited by our donations [link].   As we grow we hope to provide more services in the outlying areas of the state.  But we still encourage you to call if you are having issues related to deafness regardless of where you live.

  •    DEAF Inc. has a lawyer; will he represent me?

First contact Deaf Support.  Our Deaf Support Specialists will help you to determine what kind of help you need.  For example, you may need a referral, or you may need resources, or maybe both.  Sometimes we can resolve your issue for you immediately so you will not need to hire a lawyer.

  •    Can DEAF Inc. help me file a complaint against a business?

Yes, we can.  We are familiar with most laws concerning discrimination in Missouri.  But also, DEAF Inc. has a strong belief that we should attempt to resolve disputes/issues before filing a complaint.  This gives businesses a chance to be educated about deaf issues, and also gives our clients a chance to learn as well.

  •    I have a court date coming up soon and I don’t want to feel alone.  Can Deaf Support go

       with me to court?

Right now, that depends on how busy we are and how important it is that we be there.  We are a growing organization, but we do not always have time or resources available to go to court with our clients and we often have other clients to meet with during the day.  Sometimes we go with a client to make sure that an interpreter is present, and sometimes we go for emotional support.  As we grow, we hope to devote more time to off-site meetings and assistance.

  •    Will Deaf Inc. solve my problem for me?

No.  We want you to solve your own problem.  We understand that sometimes it can be difficult to solve your own problem, especially when there is no interpreter there, or when you do not understand your rights.  That’s why we are here – to provide you with the tools you need to succeed. By contacting us, you are taking the first step toward solving your problem.  So we will not be solving your problem – you will!

  •    What services does Deaf Support Provide?

We help you to find answers to your questions, issues, and problems.  Our main focus is communication access- we want to make sure that you are able to communicate so you can be empowered to solve your own problem.  We will meet with you and discuss your situation and help you make a plan for dealing with your situation.  Then we will help you take action, such as helping you fill out forms, making a video to document your situation, and/or help to educate you about what options are available for you.  We also will try to find resources for you and, when we cannot find the answer, we will collaborate with other organizations to find resources to help you resolve your issue.
