Empowerment

At DEAF Inc., our mission is to empower you.  We want to do that by assisting you in getting what you need.  And we want to help you learn to do it yourself so you can succeed.  When you need more help than we can provide, will help you find that assistance also.

Empowerment is divided into two areas:  Deaf Support and Advocacy.

Advocacy

Advocacy means promoting the interests of the deaf community at large by building relationships with legislators, attorneys and other professionals.  It also means contacting those who may be violating your rights to equal access.  If you are deaf/hard of hearing, or have a family member who is deaf, you may have experienced situations where it was difficult to obtain professional help or services because of communication access issues - some professionals are reluctant to provide services to the deaf because of the high cost of interpreters.   The Advocacy department works with such professionals to educate and encourage them to meet their responsibilities under the law.  The Advocacy department also works to create positive change for the deaf and hard of hearing by building political relationships, creating publicity, and organizing unified efforts to bring deaf issues to the light of day.

Deaf Support

Deaf Support means meeting with you and helping you to understand how you may use your own abilities, intelligence, and education to get what you want. For example, you may not know how to apply for a job - we can help you create a resume.  Or maybe your legal rights have been violated and you need help filing complaints - we can give you the forms and help you make a captioned video to document your complaint.   Maybe you are afraid to try something new and want support from a friend who knows what it's like to be deaf and can show you how to navigate in the "hearing" world - if we know how, we will show you the way.  These are things that the Deaf Support Specialist does.  If we do not know how to help you, we will refer you to others who can, such as other public service agencies, attorneys, or other professionals.

Collaboration

We believe that all deaf communities should be united as one big family.  We want to collaborate with all organizations that promote personal empowerment for the deaf.   By working together as a team, we will raise the quality of life for all deaf communities.  At the same time. we empower you to accomplish what you want for your life.
