CLASSIFICATION:     PART-TIME, NON-EXEMPT

 

REPORTS TO:  Director of Interpreting Department

 

BACKGROUND: Deaf Empowerment Awareness Foundation, Inc (DEAF, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that provides community and interpreting services for deaf/hard of hearing communities.

 

SUMMARY:

This position is primarily responsible for providing community-based interpreting service with a strong emphasis in educational settings for deaf for, hard of hearing and hearing consumers. Position is to facilitate communication in the language readily understood (i.e. American Sign Language, CASE manually coded English, contact variety, Signed Exact English, or Oral)

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Prepares for interpreting assignments by reviewing materials, and meeting briefly with the client before the assignment begins.
  • Maintains strict consumer confidentiality and the utmost professional standards.
  • Informs Director of Interpreting on any matters of concern with regard to clients and interpreting situations.
  • Facilitate communication between special educators, general educators, and others to successfully integrate deaf and hard of hearing students in the classroom.
  • Maintains a professional, ethical, and respectful image as an educational interpreter.
  • Analyze communication and the interpreting process to produce a linguistically appropriate representation of classroom for each students ability and goals.
  • Demonstrate knowledge about deafness in the education process.
  • Demonstrate knowledge about fostering/meeting the needs of the students.
  • Interpret after school activities, meetings, parent-teachers conferences, and related school functions.
  • Submits all required paperwork and timesheets to the school and to the Director of Interpreting Department.
  • Must have a responsibility to treat deaf and hard of hearing students with equality and respect.
  • Maintains CEU’s for license and certification.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

 

  • Position requires employee to be proficient in sign language to facilitate communication and successfully integrate deaf and hard of hearing students in the classrooms.
  • Working knowledge of interpreter code of ethics; strong understanding of deaf culture; good articulation and voicing skills; sensitivity to students needs.
  • Must have knowledge of curriculum, teaching, and tutoring methods.
  • Travel requires use of personal vehicle.
  • 2+ years of experience/knowledge in the interpreting industry or Up to two years experience working with and interpreting for deaf/hard of hearing students.

 

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

 

This position requires valid and current Missouri Certificate(s) to interpret in educational settings and State of Missouri License from the State Committee of Interpreters (SCI). Interpreters must pass a skill assessment screening or possess MICS and/or BEI Level 3 or higher, NAD-RID, QA, EIPA or ITP certification.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to obtain fingerprinting clearance & submit to a background check
