Each group (one adult required) will go on a hunt, finding a listed items throughout Bearcat Getaway campground, returning all the items to DEAF Inc. booth by 5:00 pm for a prize. May the highest points win!

In this workshop, you will learn what DEAF Inc. is all about and how to empower yourself or others.

In this workshop, Branton will give a presentation about why it is important to include Certified Deaf Interpreters at interpreting assignments. He will briefly explain about CDI history as it started back in the 1850’s. Participants will be involved with “hands on” experiences of being CDI in a situation.

Each group will be assigned to find their color coded items. Must contain all the clues before meeting Jester. The group will win VIP dinner with Jester!

Workshop 3: Is the Food in My Kitchen Safe??

Presenter: Richard Layton

Technology has allowed scientist a quicker path towards discovering the causes of most food borne illnesses, quite often the media and so called nutrition experts take these discoveries out of context and cause unnecessary fear. The average consumer relies on information they read or see and take precautions or change their eating habits based on much of this information whether its accurate or not. Recently both the USDA and FDA determined that more needs to be done to properly educate consumers on the risks and preventions that consumer should be aware of that can be applied at the last point of defense, the kitchen. This presentation will outline the various food infections and illnesses and what steps consumers can do defensively to reduce the risk of contracting these various infections and illnesses. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has determined that roughly 60% of all food borne illnesses are caused by poor food handling practices, this presentation will bring forth issues that consumers often overlook as preventive practice towards food safety. Attendants to the presentation will be given information on simple solutions that can be made at home to become proactive in preventing food borne illnesses in their home.

Workshop 4: What the %$#@ Did You Just Sign??

The use of words and phrases that are considered obscenities of foul language in spoken English discourse are not always used the same way or with the same subtext in ASL and Deaf culture environment (in fact is often used in non-offensive or derogatory manner) and often can present difficulties in voicing ASL discourse accurately or receptive comprehension in conversation. This workshop will clarify the actual contextual meanings of specific words and phrases as they are used in ASL discourse and the best way to voice or otherwise interpret these words/phrases.

Workshop 5: Interpreting ASL Comedy Panel

Presenter:Trix Bruce, Patrick Fischer, Crom Saunders, and Branton Stewart.

CEU Credit: .2 (RID and MIC Approved)

This workshop will demonstrate various comedians’ perspectives, styles, comments, and preferences.  Tips on how to best fit ‘our voice’ interpretation to the ASL presentation. Some of the objectives are:
  • Observe many examples of live ASL stories/jokes from each performer.
  • Demonstrate receptive skills by observing ASL stories and applying English register.
  • Identify repetitive story lines, rhythmic repetition, and other conventions of ASL storytelling and poetry.

Canoeing & Rafting at Bearcat Getaway

You will need to call Bearcat Getaway Campground directly to make reservations for your floating pleasures. DEAF Inc. does not handle reservations for canoe, tube or raft rentals. Please call Bearcat Getaway directly since they do not take reservations by email. Availability can change from minute to minute, so please call their office for inquiries regarding availability.

Canoes

$42 per day (only for 1-2 people per canoe)
Pets are welcomed to ride in the canoes.


Rafts

Please note there will be a $25 damage deposit on each raft that will be refunded at the end of your float trip when your raft is returned undamaged.

(Pets are not allowed on the raft. If you do wish to bring your pets on the float trip, you can have them riding with you in canoes, not rafts)


Tubes

Bearcat do no longer rent tubes, but if you bring your own or buy one from Bearcat's General Store, they will transport you to the put-in for $12 per person.

REMINDER: Bearcat must know in advance so that they may schedule your bus ride.


Boat Shuttles

Boat Shuttles must be arranged in advance.

They will shuttle your own personal canoe, raft or kayak and two people for $30, if you decide to bring your own boat on your trip (only $30 per boat and 1-2 people). If there are more than 2 people in your party, each extra person will be charged $10 per person to board the bus with you.
