DEAF Inc. hosts or participates in several awareness events every year. Such focus could be on the Hearing to increase their understanding on how to communicate more effectively with the Deaf or visa versa.
Annual Deaf WinterFest
Our largest deaf awareness each year is Deaf WinterFest, which is hosted in March near the end of the winter season. Deaf WinterFest includes a Deaf Expo, broomball tournament, VIP dinner and evening entertainent. Deaf Expo usually have over 30 exhibitors, demonstrating products and services made available to the deaf and hard of hearing audience. Evening entertainment tends to consist of deaf and hard of hearing entertainers. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents of deaf children, student interpreters and people who are new to the deaf community. For more information about Deaf WinterFest, check out the events page.
Deaf Awareness Night at the Blues
In partnership with the St. Louis Blues, we aim to increase awareness about DEAF Inc. and sign language. During the Blues game, we created videos and activities to encourage greater acceptance of sign language users into the mainstream population. Click here to see the past videos.
Annual Broomball Charity Tournament
Sometimes, the best way to learn about a culture is to play sports and shared learning. Deaf Inc. hosts two charity tournaments each year. Broomball is a fast growing popular sport in the deaf community in St. Louis. DEAF Inc. hosts a co-ed broomball tournament every year during it's Deaf Winterfest. Each team requires 6 players (two females are required). This game encourages interaction between hearing and deaf people.
Annual Turkey Chase Charity Tournament
Turkey Chase is usually hosted during November, around the Thanksgiving holiday. Turkey Chase is similar to the Italian bowling game - bocci - which is played on grass, but Turkey Chase is played on ice with hockey pucks. The format of the tournament is usually robin-round, which allows for greater interaction and more involvement. Then a single-elimination tournament occurs. Turkey Chase is for everyone - young and old. For more information about Turkey Chase, check out the events page.
Non-DEAF Inc. Events
We do not just host events. We also participate in local conferences and events of other organizations. In the past, we have participated in the Missouri Black Expos, statewide interpreting conferences, Missouri Association of the Deaf Conferences, emergency preparedness conferences, and other events.
